Good morning,

I have 3 children. The oldest and middle are married with kids. The youngest, 35, has her degree, has a great program managers position, has her own home, etc. We supported about $30k of her degree. She is marrying a young man that is currently in the Air Force. They are planning a small wedding in April 2019 and are hoping to start a family soon after, since she will be an older bride.

Question: They are not requesting any money, but we want to help. My ex and the groom's family will not be contributing at all. I was planning on retiring next year at 66. Has anyone contributed to a wedding in retirement years and if so, did it impact your date of retirement?

Best,

Reddog53

Why would you give so much that it hurt you? Give what you can but it doesn't make sense to alter retirement plans.

A nice wedding does not have to cost a lot. It can be held in someone`s yard or in a park. I have been to wedding`s that have cost thousands....and I have had better times at back yard weddings. I would not go into debt, over a wedding.

They have not requested, nor expect, any help from you. As suggested offer what makes you feel comfortable but do not do anything to change your plans. Hell a few thousand should be more than enough.

By the time you're 35 you are way past the point of expecting parents to contribute to a wedding.

Apparently the couple is sensible and their priorities are focused on what happens after the wedding.

Sounds like they aren't expecting any help. I would offer to pay for her dress and let it go at that.

Yeah, but 25K or 75K didn't cause you to delay your entire retirement.

Since she's an older bride with her own house with all the coffee makers and toasters

she needs, you might ask if she'd like you to help in a specific way such as buying the dress, flowers, or something.

Definitely don't go into debt or delay your retirement.
