The owner of the 55+ community into which I'll be moving next spring once told me that the residents can be divided into three, roughly equal groups. 1/3 are still employed and head off to work each day. 1/3 are full-time retirees, and the other 1/3 are snowbirds. This is in a northern Rocky Mountain city.
I foresee myself being a full-time resident, but can also see myself packing the car and doing some car/tent camping in the Southwest during the worst of the winter.
My friend moved from Minnesota to a 55+ community by a big lake in Arkansas.
Most of the residents are gone for part of the year.
About half are "northerners " who go back up north for the summer and about half are "southerners" who go back down south for the winter.
