My Bravada stalled while turning into drive. Wouldn't restart.(turns over but won't catch) Can't diagnose with computer gizmo as the "check engine" light has never worked, so husband tried other means. He knew it had no spark so he tested the coil and it looked like that might be the culprit. Bought new coil and spark plugs, but still no spark. Any one have any ideas or seen this happen before? We don't have much money so we can't use a prof. auto shop. Luckily husband is old and has lots of tools.

Have him check the ignition rotor first. They tend to burn out. If it's bad, replace it and the cap together. You can't go wrong with the AC Delco brand.

He says he did that but it was okay.

Fix the check engine light. Then run a bare wire from the aldl port on terminals a and b. Then turn on the ignition but don't start the engine....see if there's any codes in the computer.

Next I'd check the ECM fuse and make sure it's not blown - I can't remember if the ignition fuse is on the same circuit or not but check it too.

How did he check the rotor and cap? Since it's off, and as easy as the rotor is to get to, replace it and the cap. It's a known problem on 4.3 engines.

Also, I've seen a few 4.3's have broken or bad wire connections at the coil. The wires are light gauge and break easily.

Other than that, it's going to be a guessing game with many possibilities. You can either have it towed to a good independent shop and have it diagnosed, or start throwing parts at it and maybe get lucky.

He says he doesnt know how to fix the check engine light, but has done some of the other suggestions. He will look to see if any wires are broken. Towing is not an option, unless it's to the scrap yard.

Fixing the check engine light could be as simple as pulling the cluster and replacing the bulb. If left on for a long time the bulb can burn out. If the check engine light doesn't briefly come on during the bulb test mode (when the lights come on as you start the car) that's the indicator it's out and needs fixed.

If you tow it to the scrappie, don't be surpriesed to see him driving the car around town the next day.

Somebody needs to man up and do some proper troubleshooting.

This car is not exactly the Space Shuttle, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out...

Pull the distributor cap and crank the engine over. If the rotor is not turning you either broke the timing chain or the gear on the distributor.
