I recently applied for an apartment at a few different places. This is not my first time doing so. One of the applications required a recent photo of all potential tenants be enclosed. I complied, but I couldn't help thinking, why on earth would that be a requirement? I suspected the management may be trying to discriminate. I could see if they wanted a photo after the person was approved and moved in, for security purposes perhaps, but not at the start of the application process.

Is this a private listing or an apartment complex?

I'd contact your state fair housing people!

Please let us know what they say.

photos can be very useful when a tenant locks himself out of an apartment and goes to the management office requesting a key or the door to be unlocked. a photo in the tenant's file is a security precaution to verify identity, especially in a larger apartment complex having 300 or more tenants.

It's not a private listing; it's a regular apartment complex. I could see requesting a photo once the person is definitely moving in, but to request a photo at the very beginning of the application process seems questionable.
I'm not contacting any authorities at this point; my conscience would like to but we need a place to live and I don't want to burn any bridges at this point. However, I'd rather not live in a place that discriminates, assuming they don't discriminate against me!

Maybe it is to prove that they do provide assistance to all races, creeds, etc.

I know that here, if you want to visit a rental, you must surrender your drivers license for the safety of the rental staff.

In a tenants file yes. But in an application? Seems fishy to me.

Yes, all the applications asked for copies of drivers licenses...I had no problem with that. It verifies one's current address and also helps prove they are who they say they are.

I ask to see a drivers license. It's proof that you say who you are. Tenants will use someone elses identity (not all, but some). We need to know WHO is living in OUR rentals.
