Considering you have a deposit and had it cleaned it by people they recommend, and you did as the PM said, I'm not sure why this is such a big deal? Yes, you made an error, and should have notified them about moving, but you appear willing to pay. (How big of a deposit did you pay?)

It's one thing for the PM to call your PM to locate you, and it's another for them to call just to try and cause your husband problem's at work. That could cause the PM problems if they follow through... Hopefully, they're just trying to scare you. Perhaps give the owners a heads up that you have every intention of paying, apologize for not notifying them earlier, and let them know about the threat.

If you still have the keys, you still owe the rent.

The rental property may have indeed said you wouldn't be responsible for the last two months rent...IF they found new renters. That was the big, "IF". They didn't, you still have the keys, you are still responsible.

And while it may not be in writing, I don't know of a single landlord that would be ok with their rental property being vacant for such a long period of time, paid up or not.

She is angry because she didn't know you were gone, she is afraid she won't get her money and she's not taking any chances that she won't get her money. If this is a "dying town" as you say, then that money is extremely important to her. You can't blame her for demanding it. I would do the same thing.

"What do you mean you haven't lived there for four months and you live in a different place altogether? No, that's not how the agreement works. I want the rest of my money now."

It's business, not personal. Find a way to pay her and the problem is solved.

We didn't skip out on the LL, we have paid. No where in my lease does it state we had to be at the property or if we left for so and so days we had to notify the LL.

I was hoping the rental agency could re-rent it out because they acted like so many people were interested, but it is a tiny tiny town that is dying and I doubt they will find new renters anytime soon. Its an expensive home for the area and it sat for quite awhile before we rented it.

My husband found he has to work a ton of overtime this weekend and by next week we will be able to pay May's rent and late fees. Then June's rent will be paid on time. I am not sure what she will do, as she wanted all the money by tomorrow and we won't have it until next Friday, but it is what it is. We can only do so much.

Thank you for all the help and suggestions. Most were helpful. Thanks so much!
gracie....thank you so much for making me laugh this early in the morning!.

Quite frankly, I don't trust anything you say about your lease...you can't seem to give a straight answer regarding what it says and doesn't say. If a property management company wrote this lease, it does address early termination and 'leaving the property unattended' (or similar wording)

You're really not getting it....you moved out of state and didn't inform your landlord, that's called 'skipping town'. Like it or not, that's what you did. So big deal, you paid the rent, paid to have the house kept up, but broke the lease by taking up residence in another state. Why can't you seem to understand the problem with that?

I'm guessing they already sent the three day notice, to the old address, and are now working on your eviction.

Have you checked the mail (or check the front door) at the old house lately?

That's probably where's it's going (or went) they don't forward CRR letters...so it may have been sent and returned to sender.

Just because YOU didn't see it doesn't mean you weren't notified.
