planning on moving from the san francisco bay area to reno to buy a house, since you can get a house out there for 150k. soooo cheap! cant believe it. out here in the city i live in, you cant get a house for less than 500K.

from what ive heard from my realtor the spanish springs area seems like it would be a nice area. also the schools in that area are rated fairly well on greatschools.com

i will be keeping my same job, which will allow me to work 100% at home and commuting isn't an issue right now, but im wondering what is out in that area? what are your thoughts of the area? would you consider it a good place to raise a family? how long does it take with traffic/bad weather to get to reno?

are there enough amenities in the spanish springs area, stores, restaurants, shopping etc, to where you dont have to go to reno everytime you need to buy something?

will be heading up there at the end of the month to check it out.

considering my top priority is finding an area with good schools and a safe quiet place to raise a family, are there any other areas in the greater reno area that you would also recommend?

If your goal is top schools then Washoe County as a whole may be disappointing. We skipped the local public schools with our younger child and put her in town at a Charter School - Coral Academy of Science, they are an excellent school with a very high academic standard which surpasses anything any of the schools in Washoe County can offer. Our son attended public schools and we learned the hard way how far down the scale they really are.

The best areas are going to include Reno high and Galena and that is mainly due to the high economic demographic and alumni who pump money into the school, especially Reno HS

thanks for the info. is that charter school free? if you have to pay how much is it? is it hard to get your kid into? seems to be 20 minutes away from the spanish springs area? are you able to attend that school if you live in spanish springs?

Fee is $125 or thereabouts per semester - depending on the age group and it includes a uniform top and most supplies for the elem. students as well as basic supplies for the mid/HS students.

The elementary can be tough to get into, it is usually a lottery process. This is about the time of year they hold open houses etc. It is the number 2 rated high school in the state and has an excellent program for all ages K-12. IMO Coral offers the best academically rounded program in the entire county. They have lots of clubs and compete in all sorts of academic competitions; Lego Robotics, Sim/Future City, Geography/Spelling bee's, Science Olympiads as well as some regional art competitions. Coral always has a very respectable showing.

Coral kids come from all over Washoe County, the school will give out lists of parents who are looking to carpool etc.

I cannot say enough great things about this school, we just love it
