I've read lots of great posts here both pro and con on the Reno area but haven't seen much about Sparks. Are there any real differences between the two towns? We are seriously thinking of relocating and read a lot about the Sparks marina, Victorian downtown, etc and Sparks sounds really great. We are retired and aren't concerned about the job situation but would really appreciate any input. We are going to rent an apt for at least a year and wonder how the area in downtown Sparks is. Love the idea of being able to walk to shops. restaurants, etc. I've read downtown Reno is pretty bad but was wondering about Sparks. Any good vs bad areas in Sparks? Also, Sparks vs Reno?? Thanks for any and all information.

Sparks is okay. Victorian square is sort of nice, and the marina is nice and has a new mall.

But if you're looking for shops, and somewhere walkable definitely go with downtown or midtown Reno. Particularly the SW. There are some beautiful old homes, and some nice apartments in beautiful tree-lined streets. You can also walk to downtown and the river, as well as the many shops in midtown on S Virginia and California Ave.

I would be glad to help you with a tour of the area when you come to town; this often helps people when they are relocating to the area and gives an idea of what is available in both the Sparks and Reno area. Do not think of any downtown corridor in Reno-Sparks as you would in a typical downtown. mod cut:

Default Still a little confused

Thanks for the good information. Still a little confused - are Reno and Sparks actually two separate places with their own identities and "personalities" or are they basically just sister cities that join each other?

If you would like a personal tour to help get rid of confusion...let me know when you will be here!
Thank you for the offer. We will definitely keep it in mind, but it will be a while before we make our move. I do have a question for you though. What do you mean when you say the downtown corridor in Reno-Sparks is different than a typical downtown? I'm assuming you mean this in a positive way. Thanks.

Since you are only a days drive away, why not look for yourself. Just seems like posting queries is an exercise in futility, and reflects a lack of significant interest.

mod interpose: One of the primary purposes of this forum is to gather information and opinions from others. Without that, this forum really doesn't serve its intended purpose. We invite everybody to post as many inquiries as needed, the more specific the better.

Actually we live approximately 500 miles away - not a day trip for us. At the present time, do not want to spend the money on hotel, gasoline, restaurants, etc. That is why I am making initial inquiries about the area before actually scouting it out. Gathering as much information as possible prior to making an initial trip seems like a good idea. This forum is terrific for just that, and most people seem to be very friendly and helpful.

Um Sparks is basically a sister city or a suburb to Reno. It does have a small downtown area and a little history, but for the most part its just an extension of Reno.

Downtown Reno is an interesting place. There is the casino part which is really run-down and has more bums than people walking around. However, the riverwalk area and midtown area are really up and coming and have a lot of great shops and restaurants. If thats what you're interested I would definitely look in SW Reno or in one of the new condos downtown.

IDK if I'm allowed to post this, but here's a nice little slide show from our annual river festival last weekend. Just kind of gives you a feel for the riverwalk area.
