But can we apply Jeremiah 29:11 to our lives and say that God just wants to prosper us and make everything go well? no. Jeremiah 29:11 wasn't written to us. It was written to ancient Israel.
In my opinion, he started floundering from this sentence forward:
"Suppose that, instead of trying to map a philosophical determinism or a spiritual consumerism on to the Bible, we actually read it?"
You should read it, so you can see all of the contradictions and errors and then post them.
Nehemiah 13:1 On that day the book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people. They found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite may ever enter the assembly of God.
Ruth 4:13 So Boaz married Ruth and had sexual relations with her. The Lord enabled her to conceive and she gave birth to a son. 4:17 The neighbor women named him, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. Now he became the father of Jesse – David’s father!
David cannot be in the assembly of god, because he is descended of Moabites.
Matthew 1:1 This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.1:5 Salmon the father of Boaz (by Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed (by Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse, 1:6 and Jesse the father of David the king.
Jesus is descended of Moabites, because Jesus is descended of David who is a Moabite, and therefore Jesus cannot be in the assembly of god.
Obviously the author is an arminian free willer.
He says we are all met with decisions every day. But what causes us to choose A over B? There has to be a cause which overwhelms our "will" to choose one or the other. Therefore our wills are not as free as he supposes. Free moral agents? How about in bondage immoral agents? Sinners saved by grace.

See how easy it is?
Sure, finding errors and contradictions in the bible is easy. What would posting them accomplish?

David was not a Moabite. Obed was not a Moabite just because Ruth might have been one.
Here is a better translation:
Neh 13:1 On that day there was read in the book of Moses, in the ears of the people, and it has been found written in it that an Ammonite and Moabite does not come into the assembly of Elohim--unto the eon,

How about somewhere between the determinist model and the free choice, where each of us has talents and likes and would do best by exercising those in certain ways, but we have the choice to do so or pursue other venues?

Hi nateswift,
In Romans 8, the apostle Paul addresses this. He states that the flesh is not able to please God. Therefore, if there is any pleasing God, would not God have to intervene and overwhelm our flesh? Otherwise, why thank God for all things as Paul instructs us to do?
Yes, we all have choices to make in life. It appears to us that all choices are freely made. But if we really stop to think about it, what caused us to choose A over B?
A person 'A' smokes cigarettes. He wants to quit but the addiction is too great. The addiction is causing his will to succumb to continue the habit.
A person 'B' smokes too. He wants to quit. He sees if he doesn't he will die of cancer. The fear of cancer is greater than the addiction of the cigarette. He succeeds in quitting.
In both cases the person has a choice. But in both cases the choice made was not free from cause, therefore each choice was not truly free.
Here is something to think about too:
Gal_5:17 For the flesh is lusting against the spirit, yet the spirit against the flesh. Now these are opposing one another, lest you should be doing whatever you may want."
What do you think concerning the above?
Peace
