i keep reading this and dont understand. some of you say that if you dont believe then your whole existence will have amounted to nothing. we would have still lived our lives and contributed to society and loved others so how does that amount to nothing?

This life will soon be over, only what's done for Christ will last.

but what about what's done for family or friends or other humans? i ask this because these groups of people will remember any good about me and any good i have done and may even follow my example and pass it on to future generations and so on and so on.

Well, I didn't say that, because I would be judging and I do not do that. We don''t know what a person really feels deep down. Maybe he does have a relationship and keeps it private..I have to keep a lot of my beliefs private just to avoid confrontation from some family and people I used to attend church with. Yes, I do think that what a person contributes to society and the love he has towards others may count..God is love..Some people may not knowingly believe in God., because we make it so complicated for them, by our preaching, my way or no way. IMO, these people are doing more real God work than we are..and I believe that counts..
I have three children and they have five children. Hopefully those five will also have wonderful children. That's my eternal life. It will live on. My, and my husband's, contribution to this earth will be here long after we are gone. I don't need more.
My husband and I represent those that go back to the beginnings of this earth. They live on in us just as we will live on in our children. That's the real beauty of Eternal Life. Real Life.....not just what we think heaven may be.
How sad that today, here and now is so meaningless too people.
My life has been, is and will be fabulous enough that if thats all there is, Im good with that.

My life here and now is in no way meaningless, I enjoy my life and live it to the fullest. I feel extremely happy and blessed, but I believe Heaven will be even better.
For what does a man profit to gain the whole world and lose his own soul.Like ILNC stated our life will soon be over and what is done for Christ will be eternal. We have to separate ourselves from worldly things and look to heavenly aspirations. We must put our trust and belief in the Lord and He will provide. Our life will be of value to ourselves and others when we walk in the way of the Lord.

Thank you for saying what I was trying to say much better
I was watching National Geographic and they had a show on. I think the title was called "Green Berets" or something like that.
Anyway, they were following Green Berets around in Afghanistan. They started talking about the Taliban and they aired a video clip of a Taliban operative guiding someone via radio to martyr himself for the cause.
On the drive to the 'bombing' the man starts to talk about how all men make mistakes, and that, Allah willing, this transient life is not as important as the one he will have in heaven. This was merely a go-between and if he didn't do this (bombing) than his existence would have amounted to nothing.
You know what's shocking to me?? Although the people on this forum aren't committing martyrdom, I hear the same sort of rhetoric all the time about this life being transient and existences amounting to nothing if certain goals aren't achieved. I don't think the leap is far to make.
My observation is: If this life is transient, and obviously far less grand than the one in heaven, what motivation is there to truly enjoy all of the wonderful things in life?
