I have asked people not to take God's name in vain in my presence it is extremely offensive to me. Another good thing to say when people say "oh Jesus" is "don't you have a peaceful feeling when you say His name". When my friend says "good God" I say "yes He is"!
I don't like hearing the p word either or the other word for bottom. This is why I don't watch hardly anything on TV anymore except the old shows from the 70's and the Weather Channel.

Why does this bother you? It is a true even if the person who says it is not sincere or has some hidden motive/agenda for saying it. I say it and I believe it, but sometimes I say and feel it and others times I may not feel it as much. I also say "Oh my God" I seriously mean it every time I use it. I have never considered it taking the Lord's name in vain though. When I hear others saying it especially if they are not "spiritually" inclined I think it is an indication of their heart's belief because "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak." Maybe I'm wrong...

I'm trying to quit using the word "freakin" all of the time. I didn't realize I did it so much until I heard my 4 year-old say it. I about died. Of course it had to be in front of my mother-in-law! Needless to say, that gave me a LOT of motivation to stop saying it.

As to the Lord's name in vain....all of them bother me. I think they are very disrespectful. I especially hate hearing "JC" used in anger.

Well, here's a reality check for me....I hate (and correct my children for it's use) the phrase Oh, My God. However, I have never thought twice about typing OMG! Did it just last night in a thread. Now, IMHO, I don't believe that it us using the Lord's name in vain. I was just always taught as a child not to say it, and I guess that it has stuck. I did hear a priest at mass say it once, also. (And please don't give me any crap about priests! I know they have their faults and we don't need to change the OP.) I am thinking that maybe it's the tone in which you use certain phrases that make them offensive. I can remember that my hubby and I were having a heated discussion once and I exclaimed "Jesus Christ". I went to confession over that one. I felt that my words were spit out in anger.

Because the doctrine of christianity clearly states that I (a professed and unrepentant unbeliever) am deserving of an eternity of agony and misery, simply because I believe differently than them.

If this is love, I don't want it.

the doctrine of Christianity states WE ARE ALL deserving of an eternity of agony and misery..but Jesus took all our upon himself willfully upon the cross, if that isnt love...I dont know what is.

WOW that's the best reply I've heard! I'm going to have to use that too!

It is especially annoying to me when I hear such terms used by not only non-religious people...but also in meetings. What really upsets me is the fact that in a professional environment they find curse words offensive, but they don't find taking the Lord's name offensive!
