Lapsed Catholics, the kind who seldom or never attend Mass, are quite liberal. New England has some of the highest percents of lapsed Catholics and is quite liberal.
US Catholics in general are politically about average. They're a bit more Democratic than average, but many of them are conservative Democrats who vote Republican in Presidential elections. That's why Catholics are one of the bigger "swing vote" groups. Although they are a bit more supportive of other religions, and homosexuality despite church teaching, than average.
However on areas where the Catholic Church tends to be more "liberal" (certain economic and environmental policies, the death penalty) American Catholics tend to come out as average.
There are many Majority-Catholic counties in the Plains or Majority-Catholic Parishes in Louisiana that are quite conservative and fairly Republican. Lafayette, Louisiana and some of the more Catholic towns in the Dakotas being examples. Western Ohio also has some fairly Catholic counties that tend to go Republican.
Catholics of Irish or Mexican descent I think come out more liberal than those of German or Cajun descent. At least judging by the "Catholic and Republican" counties vs "Catholic and Democratic" counties. Cuban and Vietnamese Catholics I think also tend to come out a bit, politically, conservative while Puerto Rican or American-Indian Catholics I think vote more liberal.

I don't believe in a god, stopped believing in faith/religion 15 years ago but was born Jewish to Israeli parents. U.S. is not a country dictated by any religion in this time, although started off with Puritan roots
