If you take the past 30 years (the time that I've been alive) I would say the openess to talk about it and the increased frequency its refered to in the media has steadily increased. Steadily isn't the right word for the past 15 years I would say the change has been drastic.
Personally I only see this increasing further over time, why wouldn't it?

In the foreseeable future, I think it would increase.

But further than that, who knows? Nothing is certain and not all things are foreseen. Some societal event could happen that swings things in the other direction. It's kind of like how in Ancient Greece things were sexually open, but in other eras sexuality was suppressed.

That is not to say open sexuality is a bad thing. Sex is natural and is obviously very pleasurable, so it's no wonder why our society has become more sexually open. I don't think sex is anything to be hushed down, for these reasons among others.

Yeah I prefer it like it is now too, but within reason. The main problem I see is the age of first sexual activity. Sorry but 12-13 isn't right, emotionally but also unwanted pregnancies.

Technology has eased access for many. It started with VHS. Prior to that you had to sneak into a seedy porn theater while trying not to be noticed. VHS and DVD allowed folks to watch porn at home who otherwise would never be caught dead in a porn theater. Then the internet came along and changed everything. Now EVERYONE has free access to it with the click of a mouse.

The question I would ask, for a certain sector of society is, how much further CAN it go.

What has changed the most in the last 50 years is not so much the more openness of sex. After all, there were always societies and subcultures where things were either very libertine, or in the case of many primitive societies, where sex never had the types of taboos we associate with it.

No, what has changed is the vast chasm between those who still adhere mainly to pre-1970 norms and those who have changed a lot.

This change has its positive and negative sides, but then so does standing still. It is essential to recognize and deal with the negative consequences, whenever possible. We are probably better placed to do this today than ever in the past and this is probably the only complete success of the "sexual revolution".

In the past, where there were dysfunctional consequences, societies tended to retreat to earlier, proven norms. These changes were seldom to the advantage of women, but did reduce the incidence of STDs and unsupported childbearing.

from what I've seen, it's mostly a matter of two very different ways of looking at the subject-- some see it as a hormonal urge, others see it as a bond in one's LTR... and, regardless of which "view" a person has, it's what they are familiar with and sees the opposite as too odd to even understand.

We've got other things at play here. UNTIL people become less insular, regain the importance of having and cultivating true friendships, and actually become more LOVING toward one another, societies will continue to see the envelope pushed in regard to sexual displays and odd perversions.

See, we don't seem to have healthy views and a commitment to true intimacy -- sex has been pushed to take the place of that, and it fails, miserably. That's why there's so much odd and exhibitionist types of behavior being pushed on us, why pre-pubescents are texting pics of their body parts to scores of other people. They want the approval, acceptance, and affirmation that only REAL RELATIONSHIPS can bring. But in this quick-fix society, they'll settle for whatever they can get.

To some extent, I fault our archaic, Puritanical views of relationships and marriage for some of this. The black and white notion that all intimacy is somehow sexual and is only good and valuable when it occurs within the context of a legal contract. People have become SO insular and concerned with society-imposed norms that they grab a marriage partner, expect that person to fill their every psycho-social-sexual need, and then become upset if/when that doesn't happen. They're jealous of everyone around them and the fact that people really do need other good, longstanding friendships and that type of psycho-social intimacy.

This lack of intimacy and other connections makes peoplf look for quick, often clandestine fulfillment where they can find it. Often, that's the sex act.

If that's all you are looking forward, that's really pathetic. There's a lot more interesting things in life besides watching other people having staged sex. And that's all you want to do when you're in the rest home is watch porn?

Just because society is getting more open about talking sex, doesn't mean that one day it's all we are going to talk about or do. If you were one of my dogs, I'd be running to the vet to get you neutered. I don't need a dog that's constantly humping everything in sight. I think that you've got an addiction problem with porn and sex.
