Yesterday I saw an ad for an upcoming African American Homeownership Fair. Previously I have also seen promotions for Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander, and Native American homeownership fairs.

Is the homeownership experience different for African Americans than it is, say, for Latinos or Asians? Is there a good reason all these groups need their own events?

I'm a member of a group with a lower homeownership rate than all of the above, when do people like me get a homeownership fair?

Then your "group" needs to work together to sponsor one. Someone needs to take initiative to drive it.

Just curious...what "group" do you belong to that has low homeownership?

Nothing more than marketing. They do it because it's effective.

If your in a group lower than those mentioned, odds are ther isn't enough of you to have a fair.

The fairs are aimed more for the vendors. having a all inclusive fair means ever vendor will show up. But a fair targeting one group tells the vendors they can send specific reps andsalespeople to target a certain group and get better targeted responses. A home loan company can send targeted information with a specific 'type" of rep to represent them if they know the makeup. It also has a better response when a group feels the fair is for them. They may not go to the new homeowners fair, but they may go to the Pacific islander new home owners fair because it's for them. Sometimes several smaller fairs are better than one big overcrowded fair. Its all marketing.

Low-income Americans, defined as those below 150 percent (or 200 percent, I've seen both numbers) of poverty level.

Math, my friend, math.

Even among the statistically "poorest" ethic minority group their are LOTS of unsophisticated but deep pocketed individuals. If the participating lenders and home builders at such an event can separate such an individual from a large chunk of their dough because they have the same skin pigmentation, language, tribal heritage or whatever else they are marketing to it is far more profitable than spending lots of resources on a group of individuals that have limited assets...

I have met hard working individuals that have literally hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting in savings accounts earning under 1% interest. Some of these people do backbreaking work and others have just been fortunate enough to be born into a tribe that runs a profitable casino. Since it is unlikely that you will magically change your ethnic background my suggestion is to work at something that will raise you out of poverty.

Good Luck!

You can't be more than 100% below poverty level. That would be zero dollars. Do you mean 150-200% above poverty level?

150% of poverty level...

If Poverty is considered to be $20000/year, then 150% would be $30000/year.

$25000 would be "below 150% (of) poverty level."

"150% above poverty level" would be $50000/year, and I think that is not 100% of the OPs rant level.
