I found a real cheap shell of a home... the shell exterior has been renovated, but inside is..well, a shell.
How much would it cost to build the inside? It's a pretty big place - can be 3-4 stories, but I wouldnt be able to afford all that jazz - i'm thinking just building the first floor and having huge exposed ceilings?

since I have no experience, it would be no DIY - just pros. Mid-range materials. Let's say I built out just the first story, maybe 1,500 sqft ? rough estimate.
How many rooms? How many bathrooms? Drywall or plaster? How much insulation? HVAC? Mid range carpet or mid range imported wood? What part of what state (the biggest variable of all)?
You are not giving anywhere close to enough information for anyone to offer anything close to a helpful answer.
It all depends. Finish out costs in a shell building could range anywhere between $30 and $60 per SF, depending on what is there and how fancy you get. Maybe less if you do some of the work or contract it out yourself and watch every dime. It also depends on what part of the country you're in size labor and material costs will tend to vary.

You should contact a local contractor - that will doubtfully give you a number until he/she looks at it - The variables are insane to guestimate - someone tossing you a number without looking at it is probably as good of a contractor as I am an astronaut.
Get 3 independent estimates... Roll a die. Multiply the number you rolled by the total of the 3 estimates. Now round up to the nearest 100,000. Then double that number.
You MIGHT come in within budget.
