I opened my own brokerage in 2018 and I am not a Realtor, but I want to be. I don’t sell, I manage. (My health really got sideways, it’s not going to get better.)
I think if you earn your living in this industry, you should pay for the trade organization membership.
Soon in Denver, all Realtors will have those e-lockboxes, and non-members won’t. Sellers prefer them over combo boxes.
If you're the broker and decision maker, what's stopping you from joining now 2bindenver?
We talked it over with our broker when we were contemplating jumping brokerages... and it wasn't an option... a shop is either all in or all out. We didn't have the choice to stay in. Down the road, he may decide he'll require we all join... but not now.
Our MLS, and the supra lockboxes, are all independent of the NAR. We have the supra boxes now... and yes, they are better.

I am a REALTOR®.
1. I need it for MLS membership and access.
2. I need it for access to standard forms. NC does not have state forms, other than disclosures. Without membership, I would have to have all forms drafted.
3. I like the access to direct input from NCAR legal staff.
4. I like the educational opportunities provided.
5. I aspire to fully appreciate the common ground that should be created by the framework of NAR and local chapters and the NCREC, if training in transactions and ethics were more intensive and if supervision of agents by many BICs was improved.
And,
1. I am frustrated by a local trade organization that too often is stuck in the past, and steered by the votes of major firms.
2. I question the direction at the national level, but also recognize that the organization represents a huge diversity in local, regional, and state standards, and also in individual members.
3. Sometimes, it seems that collecting dues money is primary at NAR.
I suppose now is a good time to remind everyone what NAR spent over a million dollars on in the fall and spring of 2006-2007.
If that wasn't enough, NAR's chief economist at the time, David Lereah, was releasing books encouraging everyone to speculate in real estate, right before the crash. I pay my dues but since that time, I despise everything NAR.

Yeah.... NAR really went over the edge there. Far over the edge.
Shameful.
I wasn't going to comment when this got bttt'd, lest it somehow cause a rebirth.
but I could see how that might be his Mom that's become quite active on the RE Forum.
