I love Logan's selection as well as Garden Supply, but they're SO EXPENSIVE.

There must be a discount place to get nice containers appropriate for flowing plants for the front porch (I am thinking mandevilla).

Does anyone know of a source? Farmer's market maybe? I don't want elaborate, but nor do I want the standard clay pots.

And I would love to find a few cheap whisky barrel containers for a container herb garden. Ideas?

We got some new ones this year at either BJs or Sams...........I can't remember which place. I think they were about $25 for the really large ones.........we got the medium size ones and they were less than $20.

Have you checked out Ollie's Bargain Outlet in Cary? Sometimes you can find pretty good deals there.

I'm not a huge Ollie's fan in general, but they did have some decent looking, larger sized flower pots last weekend for around $14.00 I think. I can't remember exactly, but they were less than $20.00 and they had fairly many of them in different styles.

You can try the two Big Lots! in the general area of Cary -- one is on Kildaire Farm Road, and the other is on HWY 55W headed towards Durham (and away from Apex). I also have had reasonable luck at the Home Goods stores -- there are three -- but their prices may still be a bit high, as they are roughly half of the retail price, so a $100 planter is still going to run about $50. Sometimes less.

I just keep my eye peeled for planters most everywhere I go. You'd be surprised where you may stumble upon planters. On occasion, the nurseries have deeply discounted ones -- end of the season, maybe nicked (often in a place you can turn the pot around to place it in the back), old-er merchandise.

Good luck with the hunt! I don't know when planters became so expensive. If you are down in Wilmington (two hours east of the Raleigh area) check-out the Pottery Plus on Market Street. I didn't realize what a great deal their pots were until I moved up here. Beautiful ceramic pots, different shapes, sizes, colors at about 1/3 of the price. Wrought iron and aluminum are generally comparable to prices here. They also offer deep discounts at the end of the season, but you can't always count on being lucky enough to get what you had been eyeing all Spring and Summer.

Several of the Ace Hardware stores in the Cary/Apex area have the half-cut-whiskey barrel planters. Sorry, but I cannot attest to price.

If you can hold off just a while, you can also get good deals at Home Depot. Last Spring, I purchased (4) dark blue (indigo) ceramic pots for $1.00 each. These are good-sized pots, and work nicely on my patio for my herbs. Even the salesclerk couldn't believe what the pots were ringing-up at, and called the manager over, but they were indeed $1.00 apiece. I was most pleasantly surprised. Rdslots's most lucky day, indeed.

You can use the 50% OFF Michael's and/or AC Moore (Sunday paper) coupons at either store. I know Michaels' usually has a great selection of planters!

OH! Forgot to mention Homegoods!!!

It can be hit or miss whether you can finding a matching pair, but if you can if frequent the stores often enough to catch new arrivals. Their prices are great, but be sure to inspect each piece as sometimes the reason an item is there is due to some slight defect or imperfection.
