I wasn't home when the boyscouts came around this year selling the kits, which I always buy! It just now dawned on me that I don't have any! Anyone seen them around?
If you need a luminaria "fix," though, everyone is invited tonight, Christmas Eve, to drive through the Brentwood neighborhood to see luminarias lining the streets of 1400 homes. (The Brentwood subdivision is surrounded by Brentwood Road, Atlantic Avenue, Capital, and New Hope Church Road.)
The luminaria project was going to end this year after 40 years, but a new group, just a short few weeks ago, took up the cause and miraculously raised the funds (thousands) to once again carry on the tradition. I was amazed at what they accomplished in such a short time.
I don't know about kits but I think they still sell the bags and small votive candles at craft stores, like Michaels. You can buy a bag of playground sand at Home Depot/Lowes. Just make sure the candle is seated well in the sand and you're good to go. There so pretty! Merry Christmas!
Sounds beautiful! But I still need some for my own street! I'll be the only neighbor without them! I know I can get sand and candles, but what about the white bags? It seems like the ones the Boy Scouts sell are slightly waxy or something, I thought maybe to deter fires? Or maybe I'm just imagining that...
I buy white lunch sacks at a party store, big bag of tea lights at Michaels and a bag of sand from Lowes. Oh, and be sure you have a 2pk of those long nosed lighter things, makes it easier to light.
A different boy scout trip must go to your neighborhood. Mine leaves them on the doorstep with an attached donation envelope.
We went away for Christmas. So I gave mine to the neighbor to light so it wouldn't look uneven!
