I'd love to relocate to Raleigh NC despite having no job lined up (yes, I know) and have been searching for apartments but can't find APARTMENTS. All I find are like apartment complex's that make me feel like I'm retiring...
How can I search apartments in the city that are by themselves and don't have shared pools, bingo night, etc...
The vast majority of rental housing in this area are traditional apartment communities like the ones you've mentioned. It sounds like what you're looking for is a rental unit that's part of a smaller building. There are some towards the downtown area and around NCSU, but the majority are privately owned. You'll either need to drive around looking for For Rent signs, search Craigslist, or find a Realtor willing to work with you (although most Realtors here don't deal with rentals).
As another poster mentioned, it is next to impossible to secure an apartment without local employment. You'll either need a co-signer or have sufficient funds stashed away (typically that's 1 years worth of rent).
When I was a renter...I found all my rentals (near the Rose Garden of the Little Raleigh Theater, Cameron Park, Mordecai) in the N&O.
Craigslist is also a good idea. I didn't want to live in a complex and found great duplexes through the paper.
