I am flying in tomorrow for a few days to scout the area & find a town to concentrate on - moving this summer.... i am so excited! This forum has been a great tool & thanks to everyone for all the interesting info they share. I am looking for a little bit of a rural area (although i am talking rural in nj terms lol) driving from the airport down through cary, apex, fuquay varina, holly springs to clayton - which is my main destination right now according to what i have read here. Any last minute suggestions i should check out. Job is out of house so that is not an issue but do have a middle schooler & high schooler so that is a BIG issue. Thanks in advance!

Try to leave F-V and head to Clayton via 42. It is a nice, understated area of both Wake and Johnston counties that often goes undetected. Enjoy your visit and bring your umbrella!

Spend a lot of time in Cary. It is the single best town/city in the Triangle, as it offers so much. You will enjoy.

Have a great trip - stop by Lake Wheeler -- there is a wonderful huge deck over looking the lake, you can grab a snack, enjoy the sunset, watch the sail boats. Turn off Lake Wheeler road and drive all the way to the top of the hill where you'll see the Lake. Head back to Cary/Raleigh along Yates Mill Pond road and see why we love Swift Creek so much!

I'd look at North Raleigh if you want rural-suburban - lots of trees, wildlife, close to things without being surrounded by it. North of 540, south of 98, between 70 to the west and 1 to the east - its a huge area full of great neighborhoods. Easy access to the city, airport, (non-toll, already constructed) 540, and the lakes and parks.

What part of NJ type ruralness are you looking for?
