Hi everyone!

I am moving to Raleigh on Saturday! My husband has been working down there for over a month and now it is my turn to get out of DC and head south.

One thing I will miss about DC (well, Alexandria, VA) is how dog friendly this area can be. I love taking my dog places, even if it is just walking around town and window shopping. He's not the kind of dog that fits in a purse though. Are there any dog-friendly areas I should be aware of? We've already been to the dog park in Oakwood, which was wonderful. Where else should we visit?

Also, are dogs allowed at restaurants in their outdoor areas (like a patio)?

Thanks for your guidance!

Raleigh has at least one other dog park somewhere North, and an article in today's paper said they were considering a third in SW Raleigh. But Oakwood is their crown jewel for dog parks I believe.

Umstead State Park (and other state parks) allow dogs on trails, picnic areas, etc, on a leash no more than 6ft.

As far as restaurants, sidewalk cafes, etc, it depends. Most would probably be OK with the small purse-sized "paris hilton" dogs. But a big boxer or retriever may be another story altogether and would probably depend mostly on the size of the restaurant and it's outdoor eating area. I'd call head in most cases.

Forgot to mention that the dog in question is a 35 pound beagle mix.

The Flying Saucer Draught House permits pets on the patio.

There are two off-lease dog parks that I know of:

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for you as we just moved down here (also from Alexandria!), but I'd love to hear what other people suggest.

Did you ever take your dog to Shirlington? We used to take our Westie there - have lunch outside, then head over to the park across the street where she could swim in the creek. It would be great if we could find something like that down here!

MrsBTA - we've taken our beagle to Shirlington but more often frequented the dog park on Duke Street, or the new one in Mount Vernon. I highly recommend Oakwood dog park: http://www.oakwooddogpark.com/

Ejmatl's link (post below yours) for both the dogparks.

Oakwood is in, well, Oakwood... ...the historic neighborhood just on the north side of downtown.

We take our two Shetland Sheepdogs (30 lb and 20 lb) to lunch with us when the weather permits. We sit out on the patio and we haven't encountered any negative vibes yet. Many people like to come over and pet them ("Awww they're so cute! They look like little Lassies!). We've been to Jason's Deli, Panera Bread, Carmine's Cafe, Bear Rock Cafe, etc. There are tons of dog friendly greenway trails in Cary. We try to go out at least once every weekend, sometimes twice for a 4 mile jaunt. Also, we take them up to Falls Lake for hikes on the MST, which runs all along the southern border of the lake.

My sister just moved from shirlington to DC (about 6 months ago) and she was a member of the dog park there......her dog was there twice a day!!! She loved that area, and frankly, so did he (a 110 pound yellow lab named casey!).

Not quite as many dog parks around here, but we are getting there. Our dog was a 160 pound great dane and he caused more hub bub than it was worth to take him out to places (lowes home improvement, home depot were are favorites), we definitely could not take him to a patio, because he could sit and eat off of the table!
