I will be moving later this year and don't want TWC anymore (rate increase). I was in Northgate Mall paying my Verizon Wireless bill and noticed they have a Verizon Plus store that advertises FIOS. I was wondering if anyone has FIOS and if so, what do you think of it? While I'm against having everything with Verizon, I really don't want to get DirecTV or Dish Network (too many rules, invisible contracts and problems) and I definitely don't want to stick with TWC.
You can get DSL now without a phone line - they call it naked DSL.
TWC just jacked my bill $20 a month! I called and the rep magically had a discount avail that restored my old rate. I hate TWC and I wish Verizon and AT&T would get their DSL up and running across more of the area.
Fios is actually a fiber optic connection brought directly to the home. Given the relatively low density of the housing in the Verizon footprint around Raleigh I sincerely doubt we’ll see Fios around here any time soon. The cost to roll it out is just too high.
Sadly, the telecom companies have conceded most of the high-speed Internet and video market to the cable companies so there really isn’t any compelling reason for Time Warner to keep rates low. In effect there isn’t any true competition.
What we must do is force our elected officials to use some of the Stimulus Package money to increase broadband proliferation here in the US. I’m sure that’s something FDR would be attempting to do if he was our President today and wanted to get this great nation back on its feet. Think of such a plan as the modern interpretation of the Third New Deal. The benefits of such a plan would have some effect in the short term but would have a HUGE impact for our children and might actually allow them to enjoy the same prosperity that we have.
FiOS rumors have been around in Durham for about a year. There was a billboard advertising it, then there wasn't. There was a job opening for it, but it didn't say where in Durham. There was even some work upgrading the network to fiber in parts of Durham.
My guess is that it will come to the Verizon territory in the Triangle eventually, but don't hold your breath.
When TWC jacked up their rates on me, I dumped them. I have a naked DSL coming to my house through Verizon and I get my TV through Dish. The Verizon/Direct deals require that you have a landline and aren't that great of deals to begin with.

How do you like the naked DSL? I was always under the impression it's slow, not quite as slow as dial-up, but almost. Do you like having Dish? I've read some of the problems people have had with boxes not working, canceling, etc and I don't think I want the headache. Also, I don't want to be stuck in something for two years, only to have it work occasionally. I'm trying to weigh all my options, but I know I don't want to keep TWC (unless it's for phone or internet).

DSL bandwidth generally runs anywhere from 768 kbps to 1.5 Mbps while Time Warner’s service tends to be a consistent 5 to 7 Mbps throughout the Raleigh area.
Since Verizon’s Fios is a full fiber to the home product it’s easy for them to offer anywhere from 5 to 30 Mbps download capacity with an even more amazing 2 Mbps upload. In all honesty it’s the only true alternative to cable for heavy Web users.
For comparison; it’s not uncommon for people in Japan or South Korea to get 20 times the bandwidth we get here in the United States and they often get that at a lower price.
