I don't come across too many unfriendly people in most of the RTP area.

I'd say 80-90% of the people in Cary are transplants (not locals).

So the answer to your question would be the same as asking if New Yorkers were friendly... or folks from India, or Mexicans, or Californians, or Virginians, or Canadians, or people from Ohio.

Therefore, you can't really rely on any kind of "southern charm" in Cary. But you may find "normal" hospitality and friendliness there, since there are nice folks all over the world.

Cary's average income is much higher than the national average, so you do get what comes with that. Cleaner streets. Nicer stores. Higher prices. etc.

I think it's pretty friendly. Just not as friendly as a small southern town full of locals (there are exceptions, but these are generally very friendly if you're not a jerk).

Cary NC. Population as of end of 2007: 125, 460 persons.

In that rather diverse group there are really nice people and really not so nice people. With a normal distribution 85+ % are nice! That's over 106641 nice people. So Cary is like almost any other place in the US / World where people come in all flavors of niceness. So your odds of finding nice or really nice people is much much greater than real not nice people!

With those odds its 'really' a nice place to live IMHO.

Here we go again, taking a stab at transplants...how nice of you. Many people move here for a better life in terms of finances, weather and yes nicer people. But some come for very wrong reasons and hate new way of life.. those should have stayed home or did their research prior to move. So you do get some rude and obnoxious individuals, but it is DEFINITELY not true of all transplants and not all Northerners. My family and I are very nice people and grateful for the opportunities and life here in NC, just getting tired a bit of comments like "oh you are from NJ", like its a plague of some sort

So to answer OP question, "yes" people are generally friendly in Cary , because many are happy to be here and actually get a chance to enjoy their lives.

Cary is a sprawling town, about 15 miles long from SE to NW. It is mostly suburban.
The old downtown dates from the '60's when Cary was about 4,000 population, and most commercial growth has been driven by subdivision development that fans out from the old central business district.
Additionally, you will not find a true "historic district." Growth defines the town of Cary. Most homes and commercial buildings date from less than 25 years ago.
The preponderance of tract-built homes by national and regional builders makes the appearance of subdivisions very consistent, although older subdivisions built when effort went into saving mature trees are quite attractive.

Most retail services are in strip plazas, or office parks, as this has been the common method of development for the past 40 years.
You will drive for services from most Cary locations, unless you are very selective as to where you locate.
We have great medical and health care, with good access to world class services at university hospitals at Duke and UNC.

Access to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, the cultural, political, and educational leaders in the region is very good, although rush hour drives can be difficult. If you predict a regular trip to another town, you might take that into account when selecting a location in Cary.
Cary also is developing some venues, including the beautiful amphitheatre on Symphony Lake.

Parks and recreational facilities are scattered through town, some owned by the Town of Cary, and some by Wake County.
Bond Park is a centerpiece.
Many neighborhoods offer community swimming, tennis, trails, and playgrounds. You may also find a local swim club to join if you get into a neighborhood without a community pool.

If you end up purchasing a home, Cary's property tax rates ranks among the lowest in Wake County.

Yes, people tend to be friendly, and you can also find a sourpuss every now and then. We all come from the same gene pool as the populations of any town/city on Earth.

What in his post was taking a stab at transplants? He correctly said that Cary's population is so diverse, you can't characterize it as one demographic. He did mention that "small Southern town" people would tend to be at the top of the friendliness scale, but that's no more a stab at transplants than it is a "stab" at any other "non small Southern town" group, such as Southern city-dwellers. AND, he certainly didn't say that ONLY small-Southern-town dwellers were nice, just that Cary doesn't fit that demographic.

Cary folks will like you if you fit their cookie cutter mold. A co-worker was not well received in Cary because he was from Pakistan. Moved to Raleigh.

Now, for a real friendly town with Southern charm, take a look at Wendell.
