I am looking to move to the Cary/Apex area in the near future. My mother spoke with someone and was told that Cary/Apex are coastal areas and could be hit by hurricanes. I have a friend that lives in Apex and she says that it is not coastal. Could someone please clear this up for me? Thanks.

They are not coastal areas. If you use google maps you can see the distance....it's at least 120 miles as the crow flies.

On average, Hurricanes are in Raleigh about 2 times per week through the winter months. Although the games can be pretty rough, I've never seen anybody hit by any Hurricanes. They'd have to climb over the boards and walk up into the bleachers on those skates. Sounds pretty unlikely to me.

As stated above Wake county is not coastal. However, we do occasionally get pounded from hurricanes that come inland from the coast. It's not that often but it does happen. The last bad storm to blow through this area was hurricane Fran in 1996. We had sustained winds in Raleigh of over 80 mph.. Hurricane Floyd came inland in 1999 but most of the damage was east of I-95. There have been a few other storms but usually by the time they reach us they have died down enough that they just give us rain and gusty wind (20-30 mph. not too bad). Hope this helps.

Not even close to the coast, but the area can feel the effects of hurricanes if they come far enough inland.
For instance, in the mid-90's, Hurricane Fran came right through central n.c., causing a lot of damage, power outages, and uprooting trees.
Doesn't happen with every hurricane, but not immune either.

As far as I can tell, the only hurricane strength tropical storms to have tracked through Wake County since 1950 were:

Hurricane Hazel - 1954
Hurricane Fran - 1996

maybe if Al Gore is right with his predictions about global warming and the meltdown of the Artic icecap, Cary will have a sunny sandy beach and a promenade in 50 years time and we will be drinking Pina Colada's on the porch watching the ships every evening

roll on global warming !!
