Looking to buy an engagement ring in the next 3 months, and would like to work with a very reputable jeweler both for purchasing the stones and the setting, as well as possibly doing a custom setting.
Not quite what you are looking for, but I had a very favorable experience with Blue Nile. I got a great price, and the wife was ecstatic. Service was top notch.

I'm looking for a jeweler that isn't associated with a chain - someone that has a genuine vested in interest in doing top-quality work. I already have a custom jeweler in New York, but he can't show my the diamonds beforehand in person, which is why I'm going local (and also why I won't order anything online).
Grimball Jewlers in CH is really good, especially for more traditional styles. If you want something a little more unique, there's Goldworks (where I got mine), William Travis, or Jewelsmith in Durham.
We had a great experience with Bailey's in Cameron Village. They can do everything in house. In my opinion they aren't a chain because they are family owned and have only three stores. Our salesperson was very knowledgeable and placed no pressure on us at all. He was also good about helping us stay well within our (very low) budget. Their selection is huge, too.
We had a great experience with Barnes Jewelers in Goldsboror. A bit of a drive from Raleigh, but they were one of only two stores in NC that carried the Mark Schneider collection. They were helpful and patient. The store is not plush or anything like that but the owner had met Mark Schneider which is how he was able to carry his line.

My family has had a great experience with reliable loan in Downtown Raleigh. Yes, they are a pawn shop out front, but you walk into the back (which is actually a walk in safe), and they can do anything you want. I know of many families that have bought from them for 3 generations (mine included). Maybe not as many newer people to the area know about them because it seems kind of odd, but they have sold custom jewelry for a very long time and are very nice about it.
+1 for Baileys at Cameron Village. I designed a setting and they made it. Very nice people and top notch design work.
