Has anyone researched golf home club fees, both initiation and monthly homeonwners' dues? Is there a single source out there? Is it possible to buy club membership on the secondary market?

While my husband and I don't need to worry about schools, his children are teenagers and we want a home that is an attractive destination for them (and grandchildren someday-just not too soon on that one!), for extended visits. We are researching golf communities containing multiple types of recreational facilities, the closer to RTP the better. (After many years of having his personal life stolen by burdensome commutes, my husband is done with commuting.) His employer is relocating to RTP and I will pursue employment at one of the universities.

So far I've come up with Brier Creek CC (Raleigh), Crossings at Grove Park (Durham) and Governor's Club (Chapel Hill). However, nothing indicates the club fees or HOA dues.

Are there other golf communities we should consider? Where can we get information about the costs in excess of the home purchase?

Thanks,

If you're looking for golf, you're looking in the right place! Yes, there are some other great ones out there to add to your list:

Brier Creek: http://www.briercreekcc.com/ or http://www.briercreekcountryclub.com/membership.html (broken link)
(919)206-4646

Prestonwood in Cary: http://www.prestonwoodcc.com/
919-467-2566.

North Ridge in Raleigh: http://www.northridgecountryclub.org/
919-846-9667

Wakefield Plantation in North Raleigh, TPC Course: http://www.tpc.com/private/wakefield/club_story.html (broken link)
(919) 488-5100

Heritage in Wake Forest: http://www.playheritagegolf.com/golf/proto/heritagegc/
919-453-2020 x 12

Hasentree in Northern Wake County, brand new Tom Fazio course: http://www.hasentree.com/
919-229-2070 or 866-430-7470 (toll free)

Treyburn in North Durham: Also a Tom Fazio course
http://www.treyburncc.com/
(919) 620-0184

Governor's Club in Chapel Hill: http://www.governorsclub.com/club.php
919.933.7500

There is also the Raleigh Country Club, near downtown, http://www.raleighcc.com/Default.asp...id=66131&vnf=1, but you almost have to be grandfathered in to get a membership.

Most don't list their fees on the websites. Expect the initiation fees for residents to be between $28 and $32k for Brier Creek, Wakefield, Treyburn, Preston, and Hasentree for full golf memberships. Heritage is great course, too, with initiation fees under $10k.

I haven't had clients looking in North Ridge or Governor's Club yet, so I don't have firsthand knowledge of their membership fees, but I'm sure if you call, they'll be happy to mail you a packet.

For proximity to RTP, great amenities, and beautiful homes, I would start with Preston and Brier Creek.

Good luck!

Forget about Crossings. It is an awful course.

Prestonwood as of last year was $42K for initiation and Brieer Creek was $32.5K for initiation. I don't know monthly costs as I could not get past the HUGE initiation fees.

Some of the other decent courses in the area are the Preserve at Jordan Lake and Chapel Ridge. Not much of a selection in the Raleigh area for affordable golf, plus they are plowing under a number of courses for the re development. You can travel to the Sandhills area for some good courses but now you are talking 1 hour plus drives.

I just sold two homes in Heritage. The fee to join the club was about $5,000, which I didn't think was tremendous. However, it seems that if you are not going to play golf about 5 times a month, you may as well just pay for each time you play...more like $25.

Heritage is semi-private and it is $7K to join for a non-resident, $4900 for a resident (Wake Forest). Prices are a little more if you want the full membership. Monthly dues for golf are $210 for individual or $240 for family. Weekend golf for 18 is $54.

this is an interesting subject, and for me Preston and Brier Creek are way too pretentious as well as too expensive; so are there any recommendations to join reasonable quality Golf Clubs with pleasant ordinary folk as members and at a reasonable price - thanks

I belong to Lochmere since the price was right. Not the best course in the world as it needs some work and I have found that the people are decent but the club does not offer much in the way of social events. Affordable golf in the triangle seems to be somewhat lacking.

To be honest, I've never heard anyone put 'affordable' and 'golf' in the same sentence that didn't include the word 'not'.

However, that is only my experience coming from OH, MA and here. I don't even count the fees for golf in Germany!!

There are something like 54 golf courses in Moore County (Pinehurst area).
