What are the times of year with average temps in the Cary/Raleigh area? Most of all, I'd like to know how strong the snow can be and for how long, and what it entails living in that weather (tires, chains, clearing driveways, scraping ice?). From Miami, I'm a bit ignorant to the snowy weather and its requirements. Thanks in advance!

"Tire Chains?" LOL
NOPE!
We are about halfway back to tire chain country.

You don't have to worry about snow here at all really unless it's an absolute freak storm. We usually have occassional "flurries" but rarely does anything stick to the roads. I don't know anyone with tire chains. We don't own a snow shovel. Once every couple years we get ice, but everything shuts down so you don't really have to worry about driving then either.

I moved to Raleigh two years ago from Miami. IMHO, this area beats Miami's weather hands down - if you like changes in seasons.
If you're the type who hates the two weeks of "cool" weather Miami gets every year, then you will probably not like winter and fall in the Triangle very much.
If you're the type who hates the heat and humidity Miami has almost year round, you will love the weather here in the Triangle.
From my experience, the seasons here are pretty well balanced. Winter isn't too long, and neither is summer. Fall and spring are absolutely beautiful, and you don't get those in Miami (spring here is kind of like Miami winter, but you get all the beautiful flowers blooming here). You will need a good winter coat, but not a parka and long johns. Summer temps go over 90 often, but the humidity is bearable more times than not, especially to a Miamian.
If it snows here, everything shuts down from what I hear (it hasn't snowed more than an inch since I've lived here), so you wouldn't have anywhere to drive to anyway! Maybe this year we will get some real snow - I am still waiting to have my first snow day off of work!
It looks like the 1980's was the time for snow here.
