My family are moving down to Cary/Morrisville in the coming months. Although our daughter is only 1, we have thought a lot into the public school situation. Wake schools are the most talked about and I'm not sure I agree with a lot of the changes they're thinking of (most noteably, bussing and year-round schooling.) For that reason, my husband and I have considered enrolling our daughter in a Catholic school. Can anyone give me insights about Catholic schooling in the south? Anyone familiar with schooling at St. Michael's?

The Catholic Schools are pretty backwards and lacking here for the most part except for Cardinal Gibbons High. You should look into Cary Academy.

I am also considering Catholic schools for our daughter who will be starting kindergarten next year. Can you be more specific as to what you mean by saying they are "pretty backwards and lacking"? Just looking for some specifics since she will be starting kindergarten next year and we are strongly considering a Catholic school. Particularly, Our Lady of Lourdes in Raleigh. Do you know anything about that school? Thanks.

There is St. Catherine of Sienna in Wake Forest. I hear good things about it, but it is very expensive. (I think 4k for preschool is a bit dear.)

Also, look into what your base school is where you are buying a home is first before making any choices about the public schools....lots can change in the next four years anyway.

Also, most folks that have only one or two children love year around schools from what they've told me.....but if you are going by the news reports you'd think everyone hated them.

I don't think they bus kids very far in elementary school...unless you are really living out in the sticks.....but then again, we volentarily have a long bus ride for middle school (elementary was less then a 20 ride) to attend a magnet school (and don't regret it at all) but the base middle would again be a 20 mintue bus trip if we wanted that.
