One other thought: If you work for a company, encourage them to make big donations of their product. It's tax deductable, great for image, and mostly a good thing to do.
One of my customers is Kimberly Clark in Jackson, SC. They make (among other things) diapers, and I was talking with a contact there, they donated a truck-load of diapers to areas in SC. I thought that was pretty cool.
It doesn't exactly answer the question, but it's another way some of us can help.

Methodist Men is a community-wide organization that helps families on Hatteras Island with emergency assistance. 100% of donations are used for this purpose. - And most importantly keep Hatteras and Frisco in your thoughts and prayers! It’s an amazing community that I have the opportunity to live in. I cannot imagine calling another place HOME."
