Are there any areas of VA that remind you of these North Raleigh pockets? I guess I'm addressing the folks who have lived in VA. I'm planning on moving up there in the next few years, but I love these North Raleigh areas so much. Again, I'm referring to areas up around Falls Lake north of 540 (Norwood Road, Creedmoor Road, Highway 98).
You have to go way outside the urban - and even suburban - core of the biggest metros of VA to find areas like those.

Hampton Roads - City of Suffolk, rural Chesapeake, rural Virginia Beach (not sure how much those last two have changed over the years), Isle of Wight Co, far north James City Co. and York Co.

Richmond - far reaches of Chesterfield Co, Powhatan Co

Northern VA - ummm... maybe Fauquier Co? Culpeper Co?

I guess suburbs close to Pocahontas State Park right outside Richmond?

Basically outside of Rt 288 in the south and west, generally speaking.

Gotcha. OK, the closest thing to the NOVA area that I can think of is the southern part of Fairfax Station. It's a beautiful area just north of the Occoquan River, but it's not cheap. You can also go to the outskirts of places like Leesburg (Woodburn, even Purcellville) or Gainesville/Manassas or Dale City.

I'm not as familiar with Richmond, but it's so much smaller than NOVA that you don't have to go very far outside of the city to find more rural areas. The area I'm most familiar with, Mechanicsville, is farmland just outside the city limits!

Okay, thanks! Like I said, I'm probably leaning towards Richmond but I wouldn't mind living in outer Northern VA suburbs at the same time. Just not Arlington or a hectic area closer to DC, I don't think I could handle that coming from Raleigh.
