Hi,
I am an executive in the finance/accounting field up in NY. In advance of a possible move to the Triangle area, I want to get a feel for the job market/opportunities in the Triangle. Can someone tell me what the best way is to start looking for jobs in the Corporate Controllership area? I was told by one CFO/Controller who works in RTP that they do not use executive recruiters there like they do up here in NY. Up here, I would work with an executive recruiter only (or use connections I have in the industry). He suggested I just look on monster.com etc. Is that right?

I would say the opposite. I am not a fan of Monster and most companies, that I have dealt with, will use Monster for most middle to lower level positions. The first, and best way, to find out what companies are in the market is to contact either a chamber of commerce or use Hoovers/The List or something similar to do your own search. Next try a finance staffing company such as Robert Half or Spherion or similar to get an idea of what executive level positions are out there. It's obviously going to be less than the lower level positions but it's one more "person" looking for you. An executive move is not as easy but you can easily find a company out here. There are lot's of companies (Credit Suisse, Fidelity, First Citizens etc) as well as lot's of Bio Tech companies as well. First look into the companies located in RTP (check out the pdf on this page The Research Triangle Park ) and try the Triangle Business Journal and more. You can also try Job Search | one search. all jobs. Indeed and it will search the job boards for you. Good Luck.

Thanks. I had a feeling that I should still talk to recruiters. I will be on a search for a good one. If anyone knows a good exec. recruiter in the finance/accounting. Please let me know.

I would 2nd that opinion. Many of the jobs on Monster.com are mid level or entry level. Even the good ones, people that submit through Moster that I know got very little response or interest. They had better luck with MRI or other recruitment firms getting them interviews and generating interest.

I spoke with a few when I was job hunting 3 years ago, MRI is the only one that comes to mind and was pretty good. Search online for job board in your area too, I found a lot of good sites for PhDs and Biotech industries when I was looking and those were far more helpful than the generic like Monster and CareerBuilder.
