I am a widow alone planning to move to Bedford at Falls River to be near my grandchildren, daughter, and son in law. I am retired but young and healthy and physically active, but my family is just me. I would like to pay around 300-450, although could pay more or less. I want something really nice, but that I would be really bumping around in one of the larger houses and not really cosy. Suggestions? I do not need a realtor. I want something small but with really nice touches -- no townhouse or patio home. It is important to me to be in Bedford itself because I would like to spend time with kids without needing to do any driving.
Thanks for any suggestion. I have seen houses for sale online but no floor plans. I am coming down to Raleigh next weekend to have a look.

I live right next to Beford and go walking through it every day. I think it is a great community. IT is larger, but has miles of sidewalks that make travelling by foot easy. I like the craftsman style homes and cottages. They look great from the outside and seem to have very nce finsihing touches on the interior. Here is a link to a few pictures I took of Bedford last winter. I need to get out and take some more as these pictures do not reflect all the styles of homes offered.

I might rethink the realtor angle if I were you. Most of the homes I see for sale in Bedford are listed with realtors. If you make an offer without a realtor the lisitng realtor just gets the full comission that he has already established with the seller. You might as well engage a realtor with your interests in mind who will work for you as they will simply get a split of the comission the lisiting realtor would have otherwise kept all to themselves.

Anyway, good luck with the search. I'm sure you will enjoy exploring Bedford.

There are some very nice cottage homes in Falls River that might meet your needs. They were built in the late 90s/early 2000s and all have rear-load garages on an alley, so it makes for a great streetscape. They are mostly in the 1800-2300 sq ft range and priced from the high-200s to the mid-300s. This section of the neighborhood also has the greatest concentration of older residents and retirees. Though not in Bedford specifically, you'd still be in Falls River and only a short walk to Bedford. These homes are located on Cokesbury counter-clockwise between Falls River and Catara, and they are also on Catara. I don't believe any of these homes are currently listed, but it might be worth keeping an eye on.

North Raleigh Guy, I guess I wasn't clear. I don't need a realtor because I have one already, just looking for thoughts from people familiar with the neighberhood. Thanks for all your help!

Hi Sundaze, we have not put our house on the market officially yet but it is for sale and well within your price range. We are in Bedford in the "Preservation Homes" section. It is a wonderful local builder who's style is arts and crafts/bungalow. Certainly NOT cookie cutter/junk materials. These things are built to last forever. Our house is an end unit and is a minute walk to the pool. A future shopping center is planned and that is a five minute walk from our house. Feel free to email me if you have more questions! tsstriangle@aol.com, Dan

From what I've seen of these homes during and after construction, they are well-built and are very nice looking homes that are true to the craftsman style.

Yes, they really do a great job and it felt good to buy from a local builder. The materials they use in this price range are in my opinion about as good as you could possibly expect. Amazingly, their per square foot cost to buy is about the same as others. When we move, I think we will still want to stick with a Preservation Homes.

I looked at the Preservation Homes when I was buying. Loved the homes but could not imagine living in a sub-division that big. My goodness...it takes nearly ten minutes to get through the maze and onto the main street (and another ten minutes to turn left towards Raleigh).

But if thats what you like then the Preservation Homes are great andhave models that would be great for one person or a couple.

It isn't so much that Bedford is exactly what I like. It is that my daughter, her husband, and my grandchildren live there and I want it to be easy to spend time with them. My grandson is 5, my granddaughter is 3. Anyone seen/have an opinion of/ the Charleston homes there.
