In considering moving to the area, I need to understand what the local options are for typical elderly medical care (Medicare). I have inlaws coming along who have medical issues.

In Miami, with a large elderly population, many seniors sign up with a service provider (Humana for example) and they 'take care of the rest.' This means that they will send a shuttle to pick them up for appointments at their local (Humana) medical center, schedule all their appts., and deliver their prescriptions to their home, basically an all in one service. Is there something comparable to this kind of service in the Triangle, particularly Cary/Apex? Or are seniors left to do as everyone else (make your own appointments and find a way to get there, get your own prescriptions)?

try comfort keepers. I think it is like 22/hr and they do everything you are asking. They charge mileage in addition to the hourly rate.

Thanks for the response. I think I may not have been clear in my question. I am not looking for a hireable third party service to provide elderly care. I am talking about seniors on Medicare who have an HMO option. Among these, some provide transportation and prescription delivery.

Are these types of HMOs with services available in the Triangle?? This helps with not having to drive the elders to appointments.

Thanks.

I don't think that exists for Medicare here, only Medicaid. The older person I know who has Humana Medicare depends on me for rides.

Try Humana to see what they offer here. Humana advertises Medicare HMO in NC.

I work in healthcare and have not met any patients with this type of set-up (though I wish some of them did have it!). This is not to say it does not exist, but it is not the norm from what I have seen. I would certainly check with the "local" Humana and other HMOs, though.

My parents are on Humana and they definitely don't get anything like that. They're on their own.
