I'm looking for a temporary apartment or shared room in a house or pretty much anything in the Raleigh area. I've been looking exclusively on Craigslist but I'm sure there are better ways to look. Any ideas?
I'm looking for the cheapest options, and would prefer not being tied into a year lease because I'm not sure if I want to stay here but would also consider a year's lease; also don't have the greatest credit in the world but have the ability to pay every month.
"The Raleigh area" is quite large. Is there a way you can narrow it down? Will you have a job you need to be near, for example? What is it you want to be near locally?

I work at the Crabtree Valley Mall, so anywhere near that area would be best, but I'm not neccessarily tied to the job. I currently live in the Brier Creek area with family but will be leaving ASAP.
We lease at Trinity Park apartments (right next to the PNC center on Trinity Rd.). They have short term leases, but they allow you to break your lease for a fee. We had intended to do short term while we house hunt, but ended up doing a year lease when I found out about the break lease clause. The short term lease was $300+ more per month (for a 3 bedroom...probably less for smaller apartments). By the time you rent for three months you have already saved the amount of the break lease fee and you have the freedom to go when you need to. They do require a 60 day notice to break your lease, though.
As for the apartments, they are cheap, clean and low crime (I think they screen very well here) but the apartments are old and things break pretty frequently. The maintenance crew is excellent, though, and will fix things very quickly. The office staff is terrific and go out of their way to be helpful, even once you are a resident.
Carrington at Brier Creek also does shorter term leases, starting at 3 months. All apartments have recently received all new appliances, plumbing and lighting fixtures. Quiet complex, decent maintenance, and they allow pets for an extra fee.
As far as rooms for rent, do check the classified section of the News & Observer.
