I'm building a railing for my patio and I would like to get a 2x6x20 piece of pressure treated lumber for the railing top cap.

Lowe's lists it on their website, but none of the Lowe's stores in the Raleigh area stock that size, it seems.

Is there somewhere local that stocks this size?

Have you tried Stock Building Supply? I don't know if they carry the size you're looking for, but I'd look there if the big box stores don't stock it.

You might also want to call 84 Lumber on Old Wake Forest Road near Atlantic Ave to see if they can help you.

Tarheel Wood Treating in Morrisville. I saw some long lengths just the other day out there. I'm sure they have 5/4's by 20's....possibly 2" as well.

Between purchase and delivery you'll pay a premium for the 20, if money is a consideration.

Tarheel Wood Trreating is definitely a good shot. They do the wood right there so they have all kinds of things many places will not have.

Yeah, that's what I'm wrestling with now. I'm sure it's going to rock me financially. I wonder just how bad it will be. I'll probably start calling around later this week.

I was hoping to be able to do an in-store pickup at a Home Depot or Lowes and rent one of their by-the-hour trucks with the rack that goes over the cab to get it home.

Maybe I should just go with two 10ft pieces with a seam in the middle.

I bit off your original ask, but PT rail caps typically warp, split and generally become unattractive quickly.

While the price will make you gasp, the composite/PVC boards work as rail caps quite nicely. They come in 20 foot lengths and Tarheel has a good selection of those too.

Tangentially related to my original post...

I'm also looking for some long (8-inch?) stainless steel lag screws/bolts. I'm thinking 1/2 but I think 3/8 will also work. I need 10 or 12 of them.

It doesn't appear that Lowe's or Home Depot carry anything that long in stainless. There's a seller on Ebay that has them, but I'd rather get them local than wait on the mail.

Any suggestions on a local supplier?

Wilders (919) 833-2761 they are on Alwin Ct which is right off Hodges near Atlantic Ave. not sure how they handle sales without an account there as I've always bought on a commercial account. They have pretty anything to do with fasteners. Behind their sales counter they have or had a 5 foot long Allen key that has a socket size of someone like 3"!
