Looking to relocate to NC and came across this little town. They look to have a nicely renovated small hospital there also. Can anyone comment on what it is like to live in Smithfield (ie, cost of living, safety, jobs)?

In a lot of ways it is "Mayberry, RFD". Sweet little downtown (including the Ava Gardner Museum), very friendly, down-home people. I have not lived there but spent time there. I can't speak for the job market and you didn't specify in what field, but there is not a lot "there". I am not familiar with the hospital you mention. Definitely you'd want to visit before seriously considering moving--but isn't that the case with anywhere?

If you aren't ready for "small town" living (both the good things I mention about and other factors such as breaking into the social scene as an outsider, generally very conservative and borderline "rednecky" sometimes), cross it off your list. I often thought it would be neat to have a little "weekend getaway" there but I don't know if I could live there full time.

The hospital is very nice and the downtown is cute (small, but cute) . The rest, in my opinion, seems a little downtrodden. I don't know what you would do for entertainment besides go to the outlets. Doesn't seem like there is much going on. Before I am skewered, this is my opinion and people with other opinions should weigh in as well.

Actually entertainment is how I got to know Smithfield--the Neuse Little Theatre there is a thriving community theatre that draws folks from all over, and they perform in a log cabin by the river. Also, Johnston County Comunnity College has a comparably thriving Arts Program with lots of things going on for a town that size--and of course Raleigh isn't THAT far away for weekend activities. No, it's not as if you have the world at your fingertips, but if you are something of a homebody and like getting into the local culture, there are interesting things going on around Smithfield.

Smithfield is Mayberry in espanol. The town many amenities in the way of shopping and eats. But it is still very much the good ole boys club. For a small town there seems to be too many people out and about. A drive down Market Street or Brightleaf can be very congested at the wrong time of the day.

It is a small town with some growing pains. It is also the county seat and the court house is ALWAYS doing brisk business...

My guess would be the few jobs there are predominantly farming, retail, or medical.

Two best kept secrets of Smithfield--The Diner on market Street. GREAt breakfast and the BISCUIT STOP on Brightleaf. Better than Biscuitville...
