I think tipping protocol are pretty much the same here as they are in NJ and anywhere else for that matter. I am from NJ and haven't noticed any difference. I tend to tip delivery guys, especially when they are lugging stuff up a long narrow stairway!
I grew up in Jersey. I still tip delivery people. It seems to suprise them most times. It always freaks out the mechanic who works on my car, regardless the place. For me, Good service gets a tip. And a tip almost always insures better service in the future too.
The other big difference in NC is most native southerners dont offer water, the rest room or something to eat. In Jersey, when doing carpentry on someones house, they usually had coffee on in the AM and danishs or bagels. Here, your lucky if they even leave the door unlocked so you dont have to pee in the bushes.
Its that great southern hospitality! lol
I would, but then again I grew up in Jersey too. Especially if they take care during the delivery.
I've been surprised here a number of times with folks refusing tips.
Just last week we asked the guy that cleans our gutters to also wash the skylights on our porch. Tried to give him $20 and he refused, said he does it all the time for folks.

I've noticed this on occasion too. When we had the screened porch built we always had cold bottled water, granola bars and fruit available in a cooler. Sprung for a few pizza lunches too.
Never had a problem with callbacks.

I don't always tip (depends on what it is) but I ALWAYS have coffee/ cold water/ snacks and order pizza or get subway for workers (if they are there around lunch time) in (or outside) our home. And I certainly don't care if they have to use the 'facilities' LOL
For labor intensive things we provide snacks and drinks, and like stated above the crew appreciates it and it's usually repaid in attention to detail and little extras. I've tipped my roofing and painting crews $200.

I always take care of people who work on my house. My painter always leaves with a few beers, turned him on to Boddington's, and others get hot tea if they are English or cold tea if they are American if they can find a cookie or a bagel that my teen hasnt take a bite out of, they are welcome to it Sorry, couldn't resist!
Yes, i do tip for deliveries. FYI - Lowe's employees are not allowed to accept tips, I found that out recently. But, I doubt you bought your mattress there.LOL
I just had a mattress delivered, honestly a tip was the last thing on my mind. Do you tip the UPS guy too? Where does the madness end?
