I've been driving down MLK for weeks trying to figure out what they are putting next to the half empty Kroger shopping center at MLK and Roxboro. Well, last night I saw the sign that we are getting a Walmart! So pissed that yet another ChinaMart is headed into Durham where one is not needed. I guess the South Point location controversy caused them to look elsewhere. There goes the neighborhood.

So will they close one of the other ones after that one opens?

What other ones? There's one in New Hope, NE Durham, and Brier Creek. I don't think those would close b/c they are all spread out and have plenty of shoppers in each area, unfortunately.

Oddly enough, it looks like the Southpoint Wal-Mart plan is still in the works. Last I heard (a month ago?) the project was at least in pre-review with Durham Planning. Looks like the purchase of the Kentington Heights properties purchase hasn't gone through yet (ownership hasn't changed in Durham GIS).
I'm happy. Now I don't have to travel that far to get to Wal-Mart when I need something and can go to Lowes right next door. All done in one trip. Plus I am sure they will build all those little spots for small businesses so there will be some more eating places coming I am sure.

When they built the Glenn Rd one (NE Durham), they closed the Roxboro Rd location across from Durham regional. I wonder if they build both the Southpoint one and the MLK one, will they close the New Hope one? There's also one just over the Durham city line in Morrisville (right in front of the Sams Club over there).

That's a Durham/Chapel Hill store that they just renovated and made into a Super Walmart. There's also one in Hillsborough and Mebane, with smaller populations, not that far from each other at all and they are always packed!
I think building a Southpoint and the MLK one is dumb, since they are pretty close to each other. But I don't see them closing Walmarts further out. I guess they really are counting on explosive growth in SW Durham.
