New stats attest to Triangle's fast growth Kristin Collins, Staff Writer
Raleigh is now bigger than St. Louis, and Durham has beaten out Rochester, N.Y. Cary is the eighth-fastest-growing large city in the country. The newest census figures, released today, bear out what many feel every day -- that the Triangle is one of the quickest-growing regions in the United States.
23,500
The number of people who moved to Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill between July 2005 and July 2006.
728,000
The population of the four municipalities.
5,500
The number of people who moved to Cary during the period, making it the fastest-growing town in the state. The influx of new people created a 5 percent rise in the town's population, up from 3.5 percent and 1.4 percent growth in the two preceding years when the town's leaders followed slow-growth policies.
13,500
The number of new people who arrived in Raleigh during the period. It's growth rate, 3.9 percent, ranked 15th in the nation.
