My husband and I are considering moving to the triangle area in NC. I am an elementary teacher with a master's in gifted ed and I'd love to work as a gifted specialist at the elementary level. The local school systems all appear from their websites to have good solid programming for kids who need more advanced academics in elementary school. It's hard to tell how schools are being experienced / perceived from the websites, though. I will say that I'm not averse to working with diverse student populations (socioeconomically or ethnically). Smart kids come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds and live in all sorts of neighborhoods.
Any opinions? Systems with especially good/bad reps? Thanks!!

With the new budget proposals education is taking a big hit down here. i wouldn't even think about moving unless you already had a job lined up. I don't remember the number of teachers losing jobs this year but it was scary!

what he/she said. VA, as conservative, pro-business state, is in much better fiscal shape than NC in this economic crisis. NC is throwing their money away providing in-state tuition to illegal aliens, and crap like that. Stay in VA

The AIG program(thats what the gifted program is called here) is being drastically cut due to budget. Many AIG centers are being closed down.

EC teachers/ and ESL are what is in high demand here in Johnston County

Source? (In fact, NC was charging out-of-state tuition, which subsidizes in-state residents.)

Many counties are expecting to on cut 50-80 teachers and MOST of the TAs. 3rd or id it 4th year pay freeze no step increases no cost of living. Don't think there are many AIG / TAG positions. Might, MAYBE can find a SpEd position here or there. Try Guliford County for SpEd...

By June there maybe a LOT of EC positions in JoCo...or there might be LESS. JoCo will either loose quite a few EC teachers or consolidate via inclusion...

To the OP...you might just have to get in line and wait your turn ;-(

If you move, can you afford to take a year or two off? Does you husband have a job opportunity in the area?

Things are tough all over for teachers. IMHO---if you have a job you like, stay put, but feel free to send out applications. willingness to work with diverse populations isn't nearly as marketable as experience with diverse populations.

I don't have much choice about where I move, and I'm in a niche also (school librarian) so I'm making plans to take my career in a different direction. Not happy about it....but where I am now is WORSE than NC.

Jobs are not that dire. Here in Durham county there will not be much difficulty finding jobs. There are plenty listed on the DPS website for contracts through the rest of the year, at all grade levels, elementary, middle, and high, and moreso, all are continuing contracts (ie, you will be able to keep teaching there for years).

My wife has her masters and national board certification, and taught in Durham Public schools 3 years before taking off last july through this whole year due to us have a kid. Having only taught 3 years in Durham county, she does not have tenure yet, thus no guaranteed position, but I can tell you she will have numerous schools offering her positions.
