I will be moving to Durham soon and was wondering if people had opinions or suggestions regarding electricity providers. What good/bad experiences have people had with Duke Energy, PEMC, or Progress Energy? Any thoughts on NC GreenPower? Thanks.
You have no choice here. You get the utility serving your area.
Progress-Energy does better after storms. Duke Power left many in the dark for weeks last bad hurricane.
Some of the co-ops are hideously expensive. Get a rate history from the utility on any property you plan to buy or rent. If new, try a similar property. All you need is the address.
You can do NC GreenPower, you can make a contribution of $4 per month that adds one block of 100 kilowatt-hours of green energy to North Carolina’s power supply and it's tax-deductible. With either Progress Energy or Duke Power I would recommend a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for electronics and computers. Progress Energy also recommend a meter-based surge protector that costs a little extra per month. Good Luck and I hope you enjoy Durham (it really is an beautiful city)!
