Perhaps "lousy" would be a better word than "no". Everything they do is a distraction from what they should be doing in supporting and improving education in Wake County. If this circus continues much longer it will inevitably begin to impact on home prices as many new Transplants will avoid Wake County because of the negativity surrounding schools here. I think the next School Board election this November will be interesting when 5 of the 9 members are up for re-election and undoubtably voter turnout will be higher than last time
We do not live in Wake, but as teachers we sincerely believe there HAS to be a better way of handling the business of education. As for General Tata's comment that the business of Wake Schools is to educate, isn't that the business of EVERY school district? Suddenly this is a new concept?

Well there are certainly some people who have a much longer list of what the business of our schools is.
The answer can only be yes in a way and here is why;
Some of the school board members were elected on a platform to move the school system to one of neighborhood schools just like the surrounding school systems. They are working hard to do exactly what they said they would do.
Some of the school board members were elected on a platform to diversify the schools in a effort to allow disadvantaged students the opportunity to attend better quality schools. There are working hard to do exactly what they said they would do.
Everyone on the school board is doing what they were elected to do. Setting aside Mr. Tedesco's arrogant way of communicating, I make the assertion that the problem goes well beyond the school board members themselves. Wake County simply has a big division in what people think is the best way to run a school system. If the currently school board majority could run everything the way they want to, we would then have a huge push to move back to the diversity based model. If the current school board minority wins one more seat in the next election and can run things the way they want to, there would then be a huge push for the neighborhood based model.
It is my honest belief that both sides are trying to what they think is best for the overall school system and the students. For the last several years we have been operating under a system that none of the surrounding school systems do. This prompts the question with some people as to why? But then change is never something that goes over well, especially when we have a situation here where there is a big clash between established or native residents and transplants. Sometimes our own diversity from around the country can create problems within itself.
The question we really need to be asking ourselves is what is best for the students and is there a way we can find a compromise that both sides will feel comfortable with. If we continue to assume the other side is guilty until they can prove themselves innocent, while at the same to trying to vilify them every step of the way, we will surely be stuck in this endless cycle which guarantees to keep half of the people unhappy.
President Obama in a remarkable speech in Tuscon make an excellent point. We need to find a way to have open and honest debate about issues, but in a more respectable way. No matter how much we think we have the right solutions, we are often times wrong. We must be open to listening to all the options and thinking outside the box. Maybe the solution is not what the majority of the board wants or what the minority of the board wants. Maybe it is actually something neither side has even discusses yet, because they are too busy fighting with each other.
Everyone should ask themselves this. Do you want to stand on the sidelines and complain about what is happening or do you want to take part in the system and work for a solution that will make almost everyone happy? If we do nothing but assume the other side is out to get us and is automatically wrong at every step, then who really has the problem?
The success of the school system is important to us all. When are we all going to decide to work together and put aside our political differences? It starts with the one in the mirror first. Without that, we will always be stuck in neutral.
Most people, especially on this forum, are the sideline complainers. You can go back to old posts from them where they wanted neighborhood schools or whatever and when you see the WCPSS moving in that direction they have something else to complain about b/c it's not done they way they want it to be done. One thing I always laugh at is when parents complain about school schedules b/c it impedes on summer vacation or whatever.
The above poster is right, the school systems #1 job is to educate all children. Neighborhood schools are a luxury that really only benefits the children and parents that don't need the extra help in my opinion.
