I believe Ken 77 is referring to the Triangle Math and Science Academy. It opened in the fall of 2012. There's a separate thread about the school already:

I don't know anything about the school, but it does appear that some parents do have some concern; it might be worth PM'ing some of the folks in the thread for more information.

There is a list of applicant charter schools to open in the 2013-14 year at the state department of education website here:
Application and Resources

However, there's no quick way of seeing where each of these is located. You may need to open each one. I can say for sure that Longleaf School of the Arts will be in the Triangle, probably Wake County, and is a 9-12 HS focusing on the arts. Also, just yesterday, there was a press release that over 150 new charter school applications were received by the state Board of Education for opening in NC in the 2014-15 school year. This is state-wide, and preliminary applications only; none have been reviewed, and it's unclear how many of those will even move forward from the initial filing. Apparently something like 14 of them are in Wake County.

From what I've heard and seen, it was absolutely no big deal and the teachers caught them up very quickly.
Thanks for the good words! We've always been in traditional calendar schools and may opt for a transfer request for the traditional option since our high school son will be on a traditional schedule. However, as we're looking into this, I do see pro's to the year-round schedule of getting some 1 on 1 time to do things during the 3-week break and there does seem to be enough overlap with the traditional calendar to allow for some family vaca time.
