I've been researching threads here about dentists. I'm in need of a good one but also need to save costs (I have a couple crowns put in a year ago and they've already broken out). I read about some folks going to UNC Dental school as an affordable option. My question: will this be a painful experience? Or are they good about caring for your pain? I am very hard to numb and after a horrifying experience at another university dental school when I worked there, I'm super wimpy and nervous about dentists.

I read where people said their experience saved them money, but not from anyone saying their practitioner was "gentle" or "sensitive."

As someone who was in school there I can tell you that it depends on who you get as a student. It's like anything else in life, some are great, some are average...and some I hope aren't treating anyone right now. So it's pretty much a crap shoot. Most everyone there will care and will do their best to take care of you, however the ability to make a patient feel at ease and have things be pain free is a skill and some people just don't get it.

I can assure you the quality of work will be very good. There are so many check steps that it's hard to go astray.

Just be aware that there is a lottery to become a patient. A neighbor tried unsuccessfully
for 6 months.
