Mac, you seem to be very passionate on these wage issues as every time it comes up you start attacking how people on this forum make a living. You seem to be a very intelligent guy and I guess your opinions are based on your personal experiences but Im sure you realize there are many different types of business models out there with many different methods of arriving at hourly rates that are charged for labor. If a business is selling mostly labor with a small percentage of material costs then the labor needs to be heavily marked up to support the business versus having a model that supplies a lot of material (marked up) and trades, along with the labor where the gross profit is generated from multiple sources. In the remodeling industry if you're not making 35 to 40% gross profit you will not survive but in new home construction if you tried to make that kind of GP you would never sell a house. Mark

So Mac in your example above you nailed it. That's exactly what happens but the guy that started his own business because he thought he was being cheated does the same thing to his employee because he realizes how difficult it is to run a business and make money so he learns that maybe his boss wasn't cheating him. He just didn't understand the economics of a business until he experienced it for himself. I spend a lot of time educating my guys on where the money goes so they understand when they bring in a check from a customer for five figures and sometimes six that them know it doesn't mean I'm running off to the islands for a few weeks.

Yea it's me......I admit it, I'm guilty of working long hours on the backs of others to provide for myself and my family. Never put off until tomorrow what you can get someone else to do for you today.
