We're headed down to Cape Haze next week for a couple of months. During discussions, the question came up: "Hm, I wonder if we should take our snorkel gear?". Is snorkeling from the Gulf beaches worthwhile or should we use the space in the car for something else?

ABSOLUTELY! Mind you that as the water warms up to the mid 80's, the water will lose clarity. Incoming tide is also MUCH clearer than an outgoing tide for snorkeling. Just don't snorkel close to the passes (too much current). We have 4 sets that we always have on the boat with us.

Thanks HH. We'll pack 'em up then. Just wasn't sure if from the public beaches it'd be worth while. Sounds like it is.

Edit: and forgive my stupidity; where are "the passes"?

Gotcha - Thanks Mike! It certainly makes sense that the currents would be brutal there looking at the overhead!

Yes, you'll find sand dollars, small conchs, crabs, and a variety of fish just snorkeling at the beaches. This weekend we saw a large group of HUGE stingrays, a school of large Tarpon, 8 sand dollars, two nice beach snook, hundreds of conchs, and dozens of crabs, all within 100 yards of shore. Just know that it is against the law to take any live creatures home, including sand dollars and conch shells (unless empty). White sand dollars are just skeletons and can be taken. Velvety ones are alive and must be returned to the water.

Will do. First we have to survive two days in the car with a berserk cat. We may need some time to recoupe from it. Thankfully, there's a liquor store just around the corner from the house.

Waves have been rough, not good snorkling off the beaches, depends on weather. Caspercisn Beach has pretty much disappeared, Boca Grande beaches still good, limited parking at the end of the access streets. Don't get near Stump Pass Park beach by the lighthouse. Really bad currents.

The past two days have been dead calm at the beach. Stump Pass doesn't have a lighthouse. You're referring to Boca Grande, which is 13 miles south!
