Compassion is crawling into someone's skin and feeling what they're feeling, it's so much work to do that most people avoid going thru the exercise.

After having a tooth removed, my Dentist said No smoking for 4 days or you may develop dry rot. Where's the compassion?

If I told her to give up one of her addictions (caffeine, driving a car, unnecessarily using her Smartphone) could she do it?

I worked in a LTC/Rehab facility and I worked with some of the least compassionate people I'd ever worked with. Compassion fatigue? Only going into the nursing profession for the money only?
You make a good point. People helpers usually go into their jobs because they are people who care. If they stay long enough they soon learn that many of the things they could do to ease their patients' sufferings will only prolong the misery.

It's hard to walk that fine line between caring and not enabling. Sometimes people just "turn off" because they are emotionally exhausted.

The older nurses in their 50's/60's are so burnt out they should be driving semi trucks instead.
