I worked in a LTC/Rehab facility and I worked with some of the least compassionate people I'd ever worked with. Compassion fatigue? Only going into the nursing profession for the money only?

You make a good point. People helpers usually go into their jobs because they are people who care. If they stay long enough they soon learn that many of the things they could do to ease their patients' sufferings will only prolong the misery.
It's hard to walk that fine line between caring and not enabling. Sometimes people just "turn off" because they are emotionally exhausted.
