In the South, we often just use "Coke" as a catch-all term for these types of soft drinks. I'm reminded of a scene from a TV show I watched that was set in a small town in the South: "Hey, I need to go to the corner store. Can I get you a Coke?"
"Sure." "What kind?"
"Dr. Pepper." [/friend nods and leaves]
I remember it mostly because when asked, I'd also rather have Dr. Pepper. Actually I'd rather have Mr. Pibb/Pibb Extra, but Dr. Pepper is easier to find in my area and tastes about the same.
