There are four seasons, but the change isn't always distinct, with the exception of summer and the change from summer to fall.

When summer starts, it just hits, and stays summer - dry and warm.

Fall is like summer but the days are much shorter and the nights are cooler.

Then there is the mixed fall and winter when the rains come back and everything cools way down.

In February we can get some of our most extreme weather, as far as cold and snow, but we can also get gorgeous, dramatic days with the most beautiful skies. By March the threat of snow has more-or-less passed, and we still get some wild weather. April can have some rainy weather but also bursts of nice weather, May is usually almost always gorgeous, June is a mix or gorgeous and very rainy, and then, in July or so, "summer" happens, and it stays summer.

There are lots of visual cues for seasons, though. In late winter, the first cherries and apples start blooming, and the first crocuses, and it's just heaven to see them again.

In fall the deciduous trees turn, a we have a lot of bright maples and aspen and birch to show color.

Winter is silver and green and gray.

The seasons aren't as dramatic here, but there are four (and it rains in three of them). Fall isn't the fiesta of red and yellow leaves you get on the east coast. Some parks have gorgeous fall colors but it's simply not everywhere in the landscape. There is green here all year because of the type of trees we have, just a lot more green in the spring-summer.

I disagree about the through June part...There are tons of great sunny/warm days April, May and June. Even Feb and March have some great days. I agree that Nov-Jan is pretty bleak. Otherwise I find the rest of the year a varied mix of gray, wet, sunny and/or warm. People on here give others the idea that it's gray 9 months of the year. That is simply not true. No one claims that Portland is the sun city but the idea that it's gray 9 months of the year is not true. My son was born June 7th and I remember how difficult it was to bring a newborn home in 100 degree weather--June can occasionally be hotter than July.

What is this obsession with the weather in Portland? I live in northern CA and the weather in Portland seems ideal in my opinion.
To those who want really boring weather with no seasonal change should check out San Diego.

Oh....I have to disagree with your statement fall not being colorful. I have incredible photos off my balcony of the thousands to trees off in the distance: reds, yellows, oranges, etc. Gorgeous!!!!
