I lived in Ladd's Addition (Hawthorne District) for 2 years... there are a lot of renters living cheap (doubled, tripled or quadrupled up) in addition to the "money, families". Plus the school there is supposed to be excellent. The chef traveled to The White House and has invited the First Lady to visit the school. Some people complain that there are a bunch of moneyed snobs (parents) at that school, so if you can deal with that, you'd be OK. (Maybe you are one )

Seriously, you could do a lot worse than live in Hawthorne. I also lived in Hollywood and grew to love that even more, due to its convenience to everything. I had a car but I didn't need one.

Lots of little interesting pockets of Portland including Hawthorne & Belmont & Clinton in SE. Hawthorne would be the most turned over of the SE bunch but it's only terrible from Friday through Sunday. Alberta & Hollywood & Mississippi in NE but I'm not as familiar with those neighborhoods but I enjoy visiting now and then. Maybe more but I'm still pretty new here.

I lived in Hollywood 2 years ago. It's gentrifying far faster IMO than Hawthorne. It's just as congested and high-priced as Hawthorne. There are no more good deals in Hollywood. Adajcent, maybe, but then you're living in boring-land.

H'm. In the 20 plus years I have lived in the Hawthorne area I have to say it is my impression that it went from slum to yuppie. I don't recall the hippie era.

Also here is a tip about Hawthorne. I live about 5-6 blocks from where the many stores and restaurants begin. This is where the Safeway is located. Technically this area is the Buckman area but everyone thinks of it as Sunnyside which is the business part of the Hawthorne neighborhood.

Where I am the neighborhoods have a variety of apartment buildings and houses with young and old but mostly young living here. It doesn't have the hustle and bustle of the Hawthorne area farther East but it's walking distance to everything.

I do not think it is very much like NW Portland area. Both have their own unique differences.

Regarding the condos, there are some very new and very ugly new ones that have not sold well. People have purchased them not to live in but to rent them out.

What I like about the Hawthorne neighborhood is you can live in the "fringe" so to speak just a few blocks away and find yourself in a nice quiet neighborhood and still be walking distance to all the "action" of the Hawthorne business area.

Yeah I remember when the Bagdad was the worst theater to go to.

The fringe is changing. It used to be Safeway was the end. Then it was the middle. Now it looks as if there's at least 50% vacancies from 12th pass Bombay Cricket Club.

I am so annoyed by transplants flocking to Portland, driving up the price of housing in my home town, and changing the atmosphere. Oregonians made Portland what it is and then Californians found out, moved here and now all I here is Californian's complaining that's it's changed.

My mom was a Portlander born and raised, passed away last week at age 86-1/2... she never stopped complaining about how Portland has changed. I think some people just adapt better than others

I do agree with you that it has drastically changed, even since I moved here 7 years ago. Now don't start in on me about being a Californian! My maternal side goes back several generations in Oregon (mid-Willamette Valley and Portland)!

I know it's your first post, so here's a hint: it helps to read the title of the thread first.

yes.. blame all your troubles on us.

I live in the Midwest. I've lived here for 24 years and realize that this isn't the place for me. The south and east coast, for me, would be a step backwards. Is it so wrong to move to YOUR city?

The fact is, all cities change, and they for the most part grow. It's only inevitable.
