Hey there!

I am planning on moving to Portland at the end of the year from Louisville (my entire family is on the West Coast and I'd like to live closer). My company is closing my division, and my last day is in December.

Anyway, I will not have a job lined up more than likely (I know, I know). I will however have a sizeable savings in the bank from a severance, and $1798/month for unemployment for 6 months. I hope NOT to be on it that long.

Will anyone rent to me? Weekly rentals that are not ****holes? Any other ideas? I do have 2 indoor kitties, otherwise I'd just find a room to rent on CL!

Alternate plan is to bring a remote job, which there plenty of in my field.

Were I you I would explore extended stay hotels in the suburbs with wifi. The most expensive would be west of the Willamette river as that is where the higher paying jobs are located. Bring your remote job with you. Get a cell phone with an OR area code. Get a local address at the likes of PostalAnnex to put on resumes. Keep in mind the fact that most employers will contact you through email so the local address is only to prevent you from being screened out at the initial stage because of the cost of bringing a candidate in for interviews.

Once you have an offer in hand then look for housing convenient to the job.

Good idea, thank you. I can use my sisters address. I used to live on Belmont and love SE...but I'd much prefer to live closer to wherever I land a job. If I work from home then no worries lol.

Theres plenty of medical facilities on the east side, unless you are working at corporate offices (I think Legacys maybe NW)-
the commute won't be too bad as long as you live on the side you are working on.....

There is also Adventist health over east side....

From my experience, having moved here with no job, but money in the bank, as long as you can prove to them that your savings will cover your lease, most apartment complexes will lease to you. Short-term rentals will cost more, but are available. I chose a centrally located area (area off of Kruse Way/217/5) and then moved when I found a job (closer to work). Granted, back then, rent was way way lower. I had two dogs at the time so I just went with what was easiest...apartment complexes.

Great, thanks! I will have my nursing license within 3 months of moving there (I have to do a nurse re-entry program, as I have worked in I.T. for 5+ years). I've talked with several staffing agencies, so I know I will not be unemployed long. But I need somewhere to live until then .

There are a lot of I.T. roles there in my skill-set, but I think I am better off applying when I am local. Plan C...bring a remote job.
